San Juan Worm

An uncomplicated chenille worm for a slow drift near the bottom.

From hook to fly

4 steps

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Lay a base
Start thread behind the eye and wrap back along the shank.
Position chenille
Lay a chenille segment along the top with a short free end behind the bend and another ahead of the eye.
Secure the body
Bind the middle to the shank with firm, even wraps. Keep the free ends mobile and the hook gap open.
Finish
Whip finish beneath the front extension and cement the thread. Trim ends evenly.

Beyond the bench

Dead-drift near the bottom, especially when increased flow moves worms into the current. Use stronger hooks for steelhead.
