Muddler Minnow

A clipped deer-hair head gives this classic baitfish pattern its distinctive profile.

From hook to fly

At the vise.

4 steps

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Tail and body
Attach a short paired turkey-slip tail. Wind gold braid forward, leaving the front quarter bare.
Stack the wing
Tie a sparse squirrel underwing over the body, then matched turkey slips reaching just beyond the tail.
Form the head
Change to stronger thread. Flare a deer-hair collar with tips rearward, then spin and pack another small bunch ahead.
Trim and finish
Whip finish and cement. Trim the spun hair into a rounded head; preserve the collar and clear the hook gap.

Beyond the bench

Strip or swing for trout and smallmouth. The buoyant head changes the depth; use the line and leader to control where it fishes.
