Clouser Minnow

Sparse bucktail and weighted eyes create a baitfish fly that fishes hook-point up.

From hook to fly

At the vise.

4 steps

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Secure the eyes
Tie dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the front third with figure-eight and locking wraps. Cement the wraps.
Add the belly
Tie sparse white bucktail ahead of the eyes, tips rearward about two shanks long; bind it behind the eyes.
Invert and dress
Turn the hook point up. Tie flash and chartreuse bucktail on the now-upper side, keeping both sparse.
Finish
Build a tapered thread head, whip finish, and cement without obstructing the eye.

Beyond the bench

Strip and pause to let the eyes drop the fly. Tie small and sparse for panfish or bonefish; match eye weight to depth.
