Merkin Crab
A flat yarn crab with splayed feather claws and mobile rubber legs.
Del Brown’s crab pattern is closely associated with permit fishing.

Anchor the eyes
Figure-eight dumbbell eyes behind the hook eye. Cement the wraps and extend thread to the bend.
Splay the claws
Attach two matched feather pairs, angled apart. Add sparse pearl flash between them.
Build a flat body
Rotate hook point upward. Secure short yarn bundles crosswise toward the eyes, trapping four rubber strands beneath successive bundles.
Shape and finish
Whip finish at the front. Protect the legs while trimming yarn into a flat oval; trim legs evenly and mark tips red.
