Avalon Shrimp

Splayed rabbit strips and a four-bead monofilament keel define this shrimp pattern.

Mauro Ginevri’s permit pattern uses a suspended bead keel and splayed rabbit strips.

From hook to fly

Work through the numbered steps in order. Use the written materials and proportions as your guide; select an image for a closer look.

  1. Avalon Shrimp, step 1: Secure the weight

    Secure the weight

    Cross-wrap dumbbells behind the hook eye; reinforce with glue and carry thread to the bend.

  2. Avalon Shrimp, step 2: Build the rear

    Build the rear

    Add a short fox tuft beneath the shank, mono above it, then flash and symmetrical rubber legs.

  3. Avalon Shrimp, step 3: Wrap marabou

    Wrap marabou

    Anchor braid on both sides. Tie marabou by its tip, twist and wrap toward the dumbbells; secure and tease.

  4. Avalon Shrimp, step 4: Splay the strips

    Splay the strips

    Secure rabbit strips beside the front shank, skin inward and tips rearward. Flare both outward equally.

  5. Avalon Shrimp, step 5: Cross the shellback

    Cross the shellback

    Invert the hook; draw each braid strip forward to the opposite side and secure near the eye.

  6. Avalon Shrimp, step 6: Close the keel

    Close the keel

    Thread four beads onto the mono. Anchor its free end near the eye, leaving a curved loop about a quarter-inch clear of the shank.

  7. Avalon Shrimp, step 7: Finish the head

    Finish the head

    Whip finish beige thread. Cover with orange thread, finish again, and cure a thin resin coat.

Let it sink before a short retrieve and pause. Check that the finished fly rides hook-up.
