Alvin Theriault’s Maple Syrup is a simple Maine nymph associated with large mayfly nymphs. The sparse yellow calf tail and two passes of beige chenille are the defining parts of this unweighted dressing.

Work through the numbered steps in order, using the materials list and written proportions as your guide.

Start the thread
Clamp the long streamer hook level. Start black thread behind the eye and lay a thin foundation toward the bend, leaving the eye unobstructed.
Bench note This pattern has few materials; keep the foundation slim.
Tie a sparse tail
At the bend, secure a small bunch of yellow calf-tail fibers extending rearward. Bind the butts smoothly along the shank.
Bench note The creator-attributed recipe calls for a sparse tail, so resist adding a larger bundle.
Anchor chenille at the front
Bring the thread to just behind the hook eye. Strip a short bit of chenille pile to expose its core and anchor the chenille there, leaving its working length free.
Bench note Keep enough room for the final knot without covering the eye.
Wrap back and forward
Wind the beige chenille in close turns from the front to the bend, then reverse direction and wind forward over that first layer. Secure it with thread behind the eye and trim the excess.
Bench note The return pass is central to the documented Maple Syrup dressing.
Finish the fly
Make a small black thread head and whip finish. Check that neither thread nor chenille blocks the hook eye.
Bench note The fly needs no bead, hackle or added weight in this version.

Beyond the bench

On the water.

Fish it slowly and deep on ponds or in river water holding large mayfly nymphs. A weighted or beaded version can be tied separately when more sink rate is needed.
