A bucktail wing shelters the upward-riding hook point for working shallow cover.

From hook to fly

4 steps

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Foundation
Mount the hook point-up. Start thread and bind braid at the rear of the body section.
Body
Wrap braid toward the angled front section and secure. Leave room for the wing.
Wing
Tie sparse white bucktail on the hook-point side, projecting beyond the bend. Add flash and an equal-length olive layer.
Head
Trim butts and whip finish. Attach eyes to each side and seal with UV resin, curing fully.

Beyond the bench

Strip through shallow baitfish water. Keep the wing sparse and the hook point accessible.
