Split tails, a slim body, and a short CDC wing suggest an emerging mayfly.

From hook to fly

At the vise.

4 steps

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Split the tails
Cover the shank. Attach two tail fibers about one shank long; separate them with a small thread bump and crossing wraps.
Abdomen
Dub a very slender taper from the bend to the front third.
Wing and thorax
Tie a small CDC bunch pointing rearward. Trim it short, then dub a small thorax around the tie-in.
Finish
Whip finish at the eye. Apply cement only to the thread, keeping it off the CDC.

Beyond the bench

Fish in or just below the surface film, or ungreased deeper in a nymph rig. Use small, sparse versions when trout focus on emergers.
