A feather tail and bucktail collar make a flexible baitfish silhouette.

From hook to fly

Follow this base recipe in order. The materials list specifies one hook size; adjust proportions together when tying another size.

Set the tail
Pair saddle feathers with curves facing inward. Bind at the bend, extending about three shank lengths.
Flash and body
Add sparse flash on both sides. Wrap braid over the shank and secure near the eye.
Build the collar
Add sparse white bucktail beneath and alongside the hook. Add chartreuse above and a short red flash throat below.
Finish
Form a smooth head, whip finish, and cement. Keep the collar long enough to support the feather bases.

Beyond the bench

Strip through baitfish schools or along cover. Increase hook and feather size for pike; avoid making the collar excessively dense.
