Caddis Pupa
A compact, weighted caddis pupa with a translucent, segmented green body.

From hook to fly
At the vise.
Work through the numbered steps in order, using the materials list and written proportions as your guide.

Place the bead
Slide a correctly sized gold tungsten bead onto the curved hook and clamp the hook securely in the vise.

Set the body strip
Run black thread from behind the bead into the bend. Tie a narrow tapered latex strip at the rear with the free end trailing behind.

Shape the underbody
Wrap thread forward to make a smooth slender base, leaving a short front section clear for the darker thorax.

Wind a segmented abdomen
Stretch and wind the latex strip forward in slightly overlapping turns, then secure it at the thorax position and trim the excess.

Dub and finish
Apply a small amount of natural hare dubbing behind the bead, brush out a few fibers, and whip finish without crowding the hook eye.

Dead-drift the weighted pupa below the surface or let it lift gently near the end of a drift when caddis are emerging.
