4 illustrated steps

Work through the numbered steps in order. Use the written materials and proportions as your guide; select an image for a closer look.

  1. Orange thread foundation on a bare saltwater hook in a vise.

    Start the foundation

Secure the hook and wrap orange thread back to the bend.

  2. Yellow inner tail feathers flanked by orange feathers, with no collar yet.

    Pair the tail feathers

Match two yellow feathers; flank them with two orange feathers. Secure the stems at the bend, tips rearward; trim the stem waste.

  3. A mixed yellow and orange hackle collar surrounds the feather tail base.

    Wind the mixed collar

Tie in yellow and orange hackles at the tail base. Wind them forward together, sweeping fibers rearward; secure and trim.

  4. Finished orange and yellow Apte Tarpon Fly with an orange head and clear hook eye.

    Finish the head

Secure floss ahead of the collar and cover the remaining shank toward the eye. Tie off, whip finish, and cement; keep the eye clear.
